President Obama，Oval Office初のTV演説−BPに賠償請求

歴代大統領はOval Office(大統領執務室）から国民に向けてTV演説を行なうときは戦争開始時などに限っていた。

今度のBarack ObamaのOval Office Speechはメキシコ湾の原油流出が国家的危機であり、これの防止に不退転の決意を示す狙いがある。


oil spillについてのオバマ氏の状況認識は峻烈だ。

“Already, this oil spill is the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced. And unlike an earthquake or a hurricane, it's not a single event that does its damage in a matter of minutes or days. The millions of gallons of oil that have spilled into the Gulf of Mexico are more like an epidemic, one that we will be fighting for months and even years.”
「米国がこれまで直面した最悪の環境災害だ。地震やハリケーンの来襲は、数分か数日で収まる局所的な災害だが、原油流出は全く違う。メキシコ湾に流出し原油は数百万ガロンに及ぶ。疫病に似ている。完封に向けての闘いは数箇月かあるいは数年かかるだろう」

オバマ氏はBPにcompensation(補償)請求した。oil leakのtop kill(封じ込め）に失敗したBP、失敗の繰り返しは許されない。

JapanがCameroonを完封した翌日の現地スポーツ紙のHeadlineが凄い。
top killをもじって“Japan Cameroon Kill”、≪ニッポン、カメルーンを封じ込める≫だ。そう容易に使われるべきでないkillだが、oil spillの余波を受けて“・・・　kill”てな具合にちょくちょくお目にかかるcurrent phrasesになりそうだ。
