解りにくいLabor Thanksgiving Day(勤労感謝の日)

昨日朝8時半頃(米国現地時間25日水曜日の午後)President Obamaからメールが届いた。タイトルは“Thanksgiving”(感謝祭)。
メッセージは“Tomorrow, Thanksgiving Day, Americans across the country will sit down together, count our blessings, and give thanks for our families and our loved ones”(明日の感謝祭、全米国民は共にひざまずき、神の恵みを唱え、家族と愛する人たちに感謝を捧げるだろう)で始まる。

そして、“When we gather tomorrow, let us also use the occasion to renew our commitment to building a more peaceful and prosperous future that every American family can enjoy”(明日共に集い、全ての国民が享受できるより平和で豊かな未来を創出すべく我らの約束を蘇らせる機会としよう)と大衆を鼓舞する。
Barack Obama氏からの“Thanksgiving”に触発されて、先日23日の我が国「勤労感謝の日」の由来と意味を考える。
11月23日は明治時代の新嘗祭が1947年に改名されたものだ。
Labour Thanksgiving Dayについて英国人が解説している---
“It's Labour Thanksgiving Day in Japan, which according to Whikipedia is 'an occasion for commemorating labor and production and giving one another thanks ”(ウィキぺディアによれば、勤労をたっとび生産を祝い、国民互いに感謝しあう日」
“For most people though it's just a chance to relax and spend time with the family. I don't think we really have any of these themed public holidays in UK”(もっとも、ほとんどの国民にとっては家族と共にリラックスし休日を過ごす機会に過ぎない。英国ではこうした趣旨の国民の休日は全く見当たらないと思う)

「勤労感謝の日」はあえてで言えば≪神嘗祭≫か。失業率が5.1%に改善され求人倍率も0.44倍に少し持ち直したとはいうものの、円高が一時84台に急伸、独歩高だ。政府も3年5ヶ月振りに「デフレ」認定せざるを得ず、物価下落が企業収益の悪化と雇用への悪影響を及ぼす懸念あり。かかる情勢下でのLabour Thanksgiving Dayだが、“勤労をたっとび生産を祝う”にもjoblessでは何をかいわんやだ。

USとて同じだ。今日のNYメインストリートはカーニバルでお祭り気分だが、10%を超えるunemployment rateの現状では、心なしか空疎な感じがする。
