300議席を上回るDPJの圧勝に海外メディアも仰天、普段日本の政治問題には関心が薄い米英主要紙もトップ級の見出しで速報する有様だ。

注目すべきHeadlineとコメントを拾う。
“With Bold Stand,Japanese Opposition Wins Election in Landslide”とありきたりのHeadlineを掲げたThe NY Times電子版は「勝者の民主党、悪化する日本の景気・経済問題に速やかに取り組まなければならない」と前置きし、“Almost as crucially, it faces questions here about its ability to manage the relationship with Washington”「(内政問題に劣らず)直面する重要な課題は、同党が米国関係にしかるべく対応できる能力があるか、それが問われてくる」と指摘。Stanford Universityの東アジア専門家は“This is what happens when you have a government in Japan that must be responsive to public opinion. It will end the habits from decades of a relationship in which Japan didn't challenge the United States”｢今回、日本は世論に敏感でなければならない政権をもつ日を迎えた。日本がこれまで米国に従属してきた数十年に及ぶ日米関係の慣習に終止符を打つことになろう」とコメントする。
そのうえで、“Sunday's vote was seen here as an exhiliarating moment when the country's traditionally passive voters showed they can control their nation.”(日曜日の選挙結果は、この国の伝統的に受身な有権者たちが、自らの国をコントロールできることを示した活力溢れる瞬間だ」と同紙は報じた。

“Japan's opposition crushes LDP in landmark victory”のHeadlineを掲げるCS Monitorは、“Japan has become a normal democracy.”“For better or worse, from now on we will see an alternation power.”(日本が普通の民主主義国家となった」「良かれ悪しかれ、今後政権交代が繰り返されるだろう」とワシントン大学の日本消息通Robert Pekkananのコメントを載せるとともに、“21st century politics in Japan has started in 2009”“There is no going back. This is a tectonic shift in Japanese system as a whole”(2009年になって日本で21世紀の政治がスタートした。もはや後戻りすることはない。これが日本の全体的国家構造となる)との我が国某私大教授の考えも併載している。
最も興味を引いたのは英紙The IndependentのHeadlineだ。

DJPの党首Hatoyama氏が同紙に“The Cold War has ended, but we're still in that mode”(冷戦は終わったが、まだ形態は変わらない)とロシアからの脅威を今なお引きずっていると答え、その上で、日本の将来に対し意欲的計画を持っているという。そして同氏のプロミスは、自ら称する“経済対策、環境対策、防衛策”のHatoyama版“new deal”(ニューディール)だとするが、言葉だけでは解らない。
