社会の構成員としての責務を果たすことの意義と喜びを問いかける--My fellow citizens

邦紙にBrack Obama's Inaugural Address(大統領就任演説)のfull script(全文)が対訳付きで掲載された。TVでは18分間のスピーチを字幕付きで録画放映した。異例のことだが当然だろう。間違いなく歴史に残る名演説だった。11月以来、推敲に推敲を重ねて練り上げられたものだ。米国民のみならず世界に呼び掛けた簡潔で厳粛な言葉が続く。

なかでもボクが最も心を惹かれたのは次の部分だ。
“Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends --- honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and couriosity, loyalty and patriotism --- these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history.
What is demanded, then, is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility --- a recognition on the part of every American that we have duties to ourselves, our nation and the world; duties that we do not grudgingly accept, but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character than giving our all to a difficult task.”
「私たちの挑戦は新しいものかもしれない。立ち向かう手段も新しいものかもしれない。だが、成否を左右する価値観は、勤労と誠実さ、勇気と公正さ、寛容と好奇心、忠誠と愛国心、といったものだ。これらは古くて変わらない。そしてこれらは真実だ。私たちは歴史を通じて、これらは前に進む静かな力となってきた。必要なのは、こうした真理に立ち返ることだ。
今私たちに求められているのは、新たな時代の責任だ。それは、一人ひとりの米国人が、私たち自身や我が国、世界に対する責務があると認識することだ。その責務は嫌々ではなく、むしろ困難な任務にすべてをなげうつことほど心を満たし、私たち米国人を特徴づけるものはないという確信のもとに、喜んで引き受けるべきものだ」(1/24付A紙朝刊より)
　任務を果たし、他者に貢献することの喜びを実感できれば、それが至高体験に通じるのではないか。
