行進は続く--We still have a dream・・・

1963年8月28日のワシントン大行進。Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.のI have a dreamスピーチから半世紀。8/24,50周年記念行事がリンカーン記念会堂前の広場で行なわれ、完成したキング牧師の前を多くの人たちが行進、人種問題の解消を訴えた。

記念行事では黒人のEric Holder司法長官が演説、「50年前の行進は今女性や中南米系、アジア系など平等を求める人たちを含む我々の行進に引き継がれた」と語った。
そして、50周年記念日の8/28、President Obamaがリンカーン記念堂前に登場した。キング牧師の演説から46年後、黒人初の大統領となりキング牧師の夢を実現した象徴とも言われるBarack Obama。第2期目の大統領就任式1/21はキング師の生誕記念の祝日、演説のなかで「他者の自由は、我々の自由と不可分に結びついている。一人では歩けない」という同師の“I have a dream”演説の一節を引用している。


それだけにこの日のBarack Obamaの記念演説は“President Obama's Tribute to King in March on Washington Speech”と呼ぶのが相応しいだろう。

記念演説のなかでPresident Obamaが強調したかったのは＜人種間の貧富の差の拡大＞だった。『半世紀前には想像不可能だったくらいアメリカの黒人に成功例が出てきています。しかし、既に知れ渡っているように、黒人の失業は白人より2倍高いままです。人種間の貧富の差は減少するどころか、拡大しているのです』--

そのうえで、大統領は"We're marching"(行進が続く）と訴える---
”America, I know the road will be long, but I know we can get there. Yes, we will stumble, but I know we'll get back up. That's how a movement happens. That's how history bends, That's how, when somebody is faint of heart, somebody else brings them along and says, come on, we're marching."
「アメリカよ、旅路は長いが彼の地までたどり着くことが出来る。そう、道中よろめくことがあろうが、互いに支えあうだろう。かくして行進が始まり、歴史が変わり行くのだ。誰かが挫けそうになると、他の誰かが抱え起こして、呼びかけるのだーさあ頑張って、共に歩こうー」
President Obamaはスピーチを次のように結んでいる--
"And that's the lesson of our past, that's the promise of tomorrow, that in the face of impossible odds, people who love their country can change it. And when millions of Americans of every race and every region, every faith and every station can join together in a spirit of brotherhood, then those mountains will be made low, and those rough places will be made plain, and those crooked places, they straighten out towards grace, and will vintage the faith of those who sacrificed so much and live up to the true meaning of our creed as one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
難題山積、前途多難のPresident Obamaにとって、＜過去の教訓をもとに、明日を約束＞するmarchingは容易ではなかろう。でも、この厳粛な結びのなかに同氏の理想と決意を垣間見ることが出来る。
Barack Obamaに限らず、我々は改めて50年前のキング牧師の次の言葉を想起すべきだ--
"I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream."
