“Women's World Cup: Japan upsets U.S. in a penalty kick shootout to the championship”--The Washington Postのベタ記事の凡庸なHeadline。女子サッカーW杯の米国チーム敗北の悔しさを滲ませる。
USA Todayも悔しそうだ。Japan seizes the World Cup as USA watches title slipping from grip.「金メダルがアメリカチームの手からスルリと逃げた」

The NY Timesはchampionshipの心理をついている。“A Resilient Team Soothes a Nation”(不屈のチームが国民を慰める）
CNNが報じるように“Japan was a sentimental favorite after a devastating earthquake and tsunami”(震災と津波のあと日本は同情を集めていた）。かかる国際的心情は否定出来ない。
The NY Timesも“The United States lost to an inspired team from a nation that had sustained a monumental triple blow of earthquake and tsunami and nuclear breakdown on March 11.”(3/11の大地震・津波・原発事故という未曾有のトリプルパンチを被った国からやって来た神がかりのチームに米国は敗れた）とコメント。

米国民もNadeshiko Japanの優勝を誇り祝福し、“With each victory in this World Cup, Japan's confidence seemed to blossom like the pink flower for which the team is nicknamed. It had never before defeated a European team, it put aside Germany and Sweden. Then it won the tournament, surviving the caprice of penalty kicks against the United States.”--“なでしこ”をthe pink flowerと形容し、初めてドイツ、スエーデンのヨーロッパ・チームを撃破したことを絶賛。ABC Newsも“Valiant Fight”(あっぱれな戦い）の見出しだ。泣かせる扱いだ。

家族でTV観戦、アメリカチームを応援していたPresident ObamaはTwitterで“Couldn't be prouder of the women of USWNT after a hard-fought game, congratulations to Japan Women's World champions”(激闘のあと我が国女子チームに誇りを覚えないわけがない。日本の女子チームの皆さん優勝おめでとう）

そして、最も光った選手がいる。得点王と最優秀選手に選ばれたMs Homare Sawaを抱擁するAbby Wamback選手だ。米国女子サッカー界の女王・英雄であるばかりか世界のトッププレーヤーだ。

インタビューを受け、「日本の選手たちはお互いを信じあいプレーしていた」と敗北を認め、静かに相手チームを称賛する態度に脱帽する。現在31歳、もう一度世界の大舞台でのあの豪快で爽快なプﾚーを観たいものだ。
