無理な願いだが--Four more years !

1/10 Farewell Addressを行ったPresident Obama. 場所はD.Cでなく自らの活動の出発点、地元Chicagoを選んだ。2008年、2012年の大統領選勝利演説もChicagoだった。
Hello Chicago! It's good to be home! Thank you, everyone.で登壇したBarack Obamaは鳴り止まぬ観衆のApplauseに対しThank youを繰り返し、All right, everybody sit downと着席を呼びかける。が、いっこうに止む気配のないスタンディング・オベーションに、You can tell that I'm a lame duck because nobody is following instructions(誰も指示に従ってくれないところを見ると私はレーム・ダック(死に体)だということになりますね)と初っ端から痛快なジョーク。この＜まくら＞に会場は大笑い。さすがはObamaというべし。

Everybody have a seatでようやく観衆が席につく。Barack Obamaは本題を国民への謝意で切り出した--Michael and I have been so touched by all the well wishes that we've received over the past few weeks.(ミシェルと私は、この数週間の間にみなさんから頂戴したお別れの挨拶にとても感動しています) But tonight, it's my turn to say thanks(でも、今夜は私の方が感謝申し上げる番です)
And every day, I have learned from you. You made me a greater President, and you made me a better man (毎日皆さんから学んできました。皆さんが私をより良き大統領にしてくれました。まだ私がより良い人間になることができたのも皆さんのお蔭です)
会場の拍手と歓声が"Four more years! Four more years !"(あと4年 ! あと4年 !) の大合唱に変わる。
"I Can't do that"(それは出来ない)とPresident Obama.
51分に及んだfarewell Addressのなかで、最後の締めくくりとして言及した民主主義の問題こそBarack Obamaの最も言い遺しておきたかったことだろう。
"Which brings me to my final point--our democracy is threatened whenever we take it granted, All of us, regardless of party, should throw ourselves into the task of rebuilding our democratic institutions.(最後の締めくくりをします。アメリカの民主主義は、それがあって当然のものだと考えた瞬間に危険に晒されるのです。党派に関係なく、我々は全員がその身を民主主義行政の再構築に捧げるべきです)
次に、米国憲法に触れる。"Our Constitution is a remarkable, beautiful gift. But it's really just a piece of parchment. It has no power on its own. We, the people, give it power -- with our participation, and the choices we make. (アメリカ合衆国憲法は、めざましく素晴らしい贈り物です。しかし、それは1束の証書に過ぎません。それ自体にに力はないのです。力を与えるのは我々市民であり、参加し、選択することによってそうなるのです)
そして、人々に政治への参加を促す。"and run for office yourself. Show up. Dive in. Persevere,"
