Stronger Together

Philadelphiaで開かれたDemocratic National Convention 2016 が終わった。米大統領選の本選が始まる。3ヶ月間の長丁場だ。
4年前、8年前もそうだったが、DNCに続々登場する弁士のスピーチをfull textを見ながら傾聴した。
大会初日に登壇したMichelle Obama。話に虚飾が無く感動的だ。the White Houseでの日常生活を活写する。

"And during our time in the White House, we've had the joy of watching our children grow from bubbly little girls into poised young women......"
(私たちの楽しみは子供たちの姿を、二人がお転婆から落ち着いた娘に成長していく姿を観察することでした)
"When they set off for their first day at their new school, I will never forget that winter morning as I watched our girls jut 7 and 10 years old, pile into those black SUV's with all those big men with guns"(娘たちが転校して初めて学校に向かうあの冬の朝の情景が忘れられません。7歳と10歳になったばかりの二人娘が黒のSUVに乗り込みました、銃を持ったボデイガードの大男に付き添われて。)
"And I saw their little faces pressed up against the window, and only thing I could think was, What have we done?"(自分が目にしたのは、車の窓に小さな顔を押し付けている二人の姿でした。一体私たちは何をやってきたのか？思わずそのことだけが頭をよぎりました)
会場は笑いと拍手で包まれた。
危機管理についても平明に語りかける。"And when crisis hits, we don't turn against each other. No, we listen to each other, we lean on each other, because we are always stronger together" (危機に襲われたとき、互いに敵対しないこと。互いに相手の言葉に耳を傾け、互いに寄り添うことです。何故ならば、手を結ぶことによりいつも私たちはより強くなるからです)
そしてHillary ClintonをPresidentに押し上げようと.........。"And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters and all our sons and daughters now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States"(ヒラリー・クリントンだからこそ、娘や息子たちは女性がアメリカ合衆国大統領になっても当然だと考えるわけです)
断っておくが、都知事選を制したhawkishな政界渡り鳥、欺瞞に満ちたY.K氏にはMichelle Obamaの言葉は当てはまらない。
大会3日目、President Obamaが登場。オバマ・コールが鳴り止まない。時折ジョークを交えるいつもの名スピーチに会場は沸きに湧いた。

"And there is only one candidate in this race who believe in that future, a leader with real plans to break down barriers and blast through glass ceilings and widen the circle of opportunity to every single American, the next president of the United States, Hillary Clinton." (未来を信じるリーダー、壁を取り除き、天井のガラスを打ち破り、アメリカ人一人一人にチャンスの輪を広げるための確かな政策を持つリーダー、それこそが次期大統領ヒラリー・クリントンだ)
"Let me tell you, eight years ago, you may remember Hillary and I were rivals for the Democratic nomination. We battled for a year and a half. Let me tell you, it was tough because Hillary was tough and I was worn out."(お聞き願いたい、8年前、ご存知の通りヒラリーと私は民主党候補指名争いでライバルだった。戦いは1年半に及んだが、私に言わせれば、戦いは厳しく、ヒラリーがタフなおかげで私は疲れ果てた)
さらにHillaryの米国大統領としての資質を高く評価する--
"And that's why I can say with confidence there has never been a man or a woman, not me, not Bill, nobody more qualified Hillary Clinton serve as president pf the United States of America." (自信をもって申し上げたい--ヒラリー・クリントンほどアメリカ合衆国大統領になるに相応しい資質を備えた人物は男女を問わず存在しない。私もビルも敵わない)
Barack ObamaはDonald Trumpを叩くことも忘れない。"America is already great. America is already strong. And I promise you, our strength, our greatness does not depend on Donald Trump."(アメリカはすでに偉大な国だ。アメリカはとっくに強い国だ。私は断言する。我が国の偉大さ、強さの前にはドナルド・トランプは無用だ)

そして愛称Middle Joe--VP Joe BidenがTrumpを痛打。
"He (Trump) is trying to tell us he cares about the Middle Class? Give me a break. That's a bunch of malarky." (彼は中流層を大切にしたいなどと言っているが、冗談もいい加減にしてくれ。デタラメも聞き飽きた)
